São José dos Pinhais has a free economy in development, especially due to the presence of the Afonso Pena International Airport, and major auto-parts plants, which came with the installation of multinationals such as Audi and Renault and its suppliers. The city also is home of the famous network of perfumes and cosmetics company O Boticario and Nutrimental of food.

Trade in Sao Jose dos Pinhais is autonomous in relation to capital, far from the city center only 10 km, with large supermarkets and variety stores, which focuses especially on the mediation of the street XV November, since the large Square Matrix to meet with the BR376;

It has two bus terminals: the "Central" at the beginning of Rua XV, and other "Afonso Pena" on Avenida Rui Barbosa, the main artery connecting the two major highways (BR-376 and BR-277) which divide the municipality in 3 regions.

Has several educational institutions, notably the PUC - Campus 2, the Mill of Knowledge - Library is a pilot, and there is the culture paranaense their giant puppets and mamulengos. The municipal museum guard relics of colonization and several curious pieces.
